Esna Temple Ceiling Restored

A restoration team of the Ministry of Antiquities is done cleaning and renovating wall paintings on the ceiling of Esna Temple in the south of Luxor.

The outcome is magnificent, said Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Dr Moustafa Waziri, noting that beautiful colors of the paintings can now be seen. He expected more paintings and inscriptions to be revealed.

Ahmed Hassan Amin, director of Esna archaeological department, said all photographic documentation of the inscriptions and paintings at the temple has also been completed.

Work is underway to clean all the walls and maintain colors, as well as re-assemble stone blocks, said Entsar Moustafa, director of the restoration process at Esna Temple.

Esna Temple is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Upper Egyptian city, and is located about 55 kilometers south of Luxor on the West Bank of the Nile.

It was discovered in 1843 toward the end of Mohamed Ali's rule.
