CAIRO, June 24 (MENA) - Tourism Minister Rania al Mashat said the Karnak Temple in Luxor is the first archaeological site to receive people with special needs, adding that her ministry has trained and qualified tour guides on how to explain landmarks in sign language.

Speaking at a forum on accessible tourism in the Arab region hosted by Egypt, al Mashat added that tourism activities do not meet the needs and requirements of large segments of society, especially people with special needs and the elderly.

The forum provides a good opportunity for shedding light on the importance of the accessible tourism in the Arab region.

She went on to say that the event comes to activate the resolutions of the 20th session of the Arab Ministerial Council on Tourism in 2017, which called for holding such a forum to raise public awareness and exchange views about methods to remove all obstacles to people with special needs.

The forum is expected to probe several topics, including the concept of accessible tourism in the Arab region and the role of Arab government and the private sector to support this key sector, she noted.

In this regard, the tourism minister underlined the significance of developing an integrated vision for accessible tourism as part of Arab tourism strategies.

She pointed out that the forum comes within the framework of the tourism ministry's reform program to promote sustainable tourism development, through the implementation of structural reforms aimed at increasing the country's tourism sector competitiveness, in line with global trends.
