CAIRO: Mexico’s foreign ministry has summoned the Egyptian Ambassador
Thursday and demanded compensation for eight killed and six injured
nationals who were touring Egypt’s Sahara Desert Sunday.
The demand was delivered by Mexican deputy foreign minister Carlos de Icaza to Egypt’s Ambassador to Mexico Yasser Shabaan Thursday, Al-Watan news website reported.
“The Mexican government demands the necessary guarantees so that the victims of the tragic and regrettable attack perpetrated on Sept. 13, all of them innocent civilians and their families, receive full reparations for the damage, including compensation,” the foreign ministry stated, AFP reported Friday.
No figures for the financial compensation have been reported.
The Egyptian Interior Ministry stated Monday that Egyptian security forces had killed 12 people (eight Mexicans and four Egyptians) and wounded another 10 (six Mexicans and four Egyptians) “by accident” when they mistook a convoy of mainly Mexican tourists for a militant group in the Sahara Desert near the Bahariya Oasis.
The six Mexicans who survived the incident told Mexico’s ambassador to Egypt they had been bombed by helicopters and an aircraft while they stopped for a break in the desert, according to Reuters.
Mexico’s Foreign Minister Claudia Massieu along with relatives of the eight victims arrived in Cairo Wednesday and met with President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi over the incident.
Massieu will accompany the six survivors and remains of the victims back to Mexico Friday.
