Direct from Cairo, young Egyptian singer-songwriter and activist Dina El Wedidi performs a song cycle that depicts the struggles and aspirations of the Egyptian revolution in her native tongue. Fusing world rhythms with both personal and sociopolitical subject matter, the charismatic singer's worldwide career has been on the rise since winning a coveted apprenticeship with the godfather of tropicália himself, Gilberto Gil, who called her "a new-born star." Now she returns to Cal Performances in Berkeley with her genre-defying band, who'll be joined by a trio of women singing in the centuries-old zar trance music tradition.
