First a/c train operates in Helwan-Marg metro line
Jun. 18, 2015 15:18CAIRO: Cairo’s oldest metro line, running from Helwan to Marg districts has operated its first air-conditioned train Thursday; Youm7 quoted Metro Company’s statement.
More air-conditioned trains will enter service within a week after operation tests are finalized, according to Minister of Transport Hani Dahy.
The new trains are part of a South Korean deal to export 20 trains purchased from Hyundai Rotem for 2.2 billion EGP ($288.8 million.)
The new trains will improve service for passengers using the first metro line, Dahy said, adding that the old ones will be under maintenance.
The metro is deemed a cheap, reliable and fast public transportation for daily-basis use by approximately 3.5 million Cairenes, according to the State Information Service (SIS.)
The government has begun works at the national project of the Third Metro Line that aims to expand the subway network.
The Third Phase project is planned to connect Imbaba and Mohandiseen districts, and pass under the Nile River to Zamalek and continue to Attaba, Abassiya, Cairo Stadium, Heliopolis and the Cairo Airport.
