Blade Runner 2049 director is in talks to make new Cleopatra movie
Denis Villeneuve could be heading to Ancient Egypt.
Following his trip to the future in Blade Runner 2049, director Denis Villeneuve may be heading to the past for his next project.
The director is in talks to helm Sony's long-gestating Cleopatra movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter, following rumours linking everyone from David Fincher to James Cameron with the role.
The movie itself is based on the book Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff, which portrays the ancient Egyptian ruler as a powerful female and political figure.
The screenplay is being written by The Day the Earth Stood Still's David Scarpa, with Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal on production duties.
If you remember, the project was caught up in the 2014 Sony hack when Rudin appeared to refer to rumoured star Angelina Jolie as a "minimally talented spoiled brat".
If Villeneuve does take on the movie, it would certainly be in safe hands considering that his new Blade Runner film (another high stakes project) is getting very positive early hype.
First reviews have hailed the much-anticipated sequel as a "masterpiece" and "visually mind-blowing", so it's fair to say we're pretty excited.
On top of that, the director is also reported to be among those shortlisted to direct the next James Bond movie, which will be Daniel Craig's last outing as 007.
So in short, it sounds like it may be a busy few years ahead.
Blade Runner 2049 is released in UK cinemas on October 5 and US cinemas on October 6.
