Malnourished Upper Nile children have 10 days of food left

Eighty eight malnourished children in the village of Wau Shilluk in South Sudan's Upper Nile have only ten days' worth of food left amid continuing difficulties for humanitarians to access rebel-held areas.

Medical charity Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) previously announced 77 severely malnourished children were enrolled in its therepeutic feeding program but ran out of food as they could not be resupplied from nearby Malakal.

“MSF was able to get a small shipment of therapeutic food into Wau Shilluk about one week ago to resupply its feeding program," the group said in an update extended to Radio Tamazuj.

"In the time it took to resupply the program, about half of the children left the [feeding program] with their families to search for food elsewhere. Now, 88 children are in the feeding program. They have enough food for about 10 days before the therapeutic food runs out again," the update said.

"MSF is working urgently to secure a durable supply chain to Wau Shilluk to maintain the feeding program and deliver medical humanitarian assistance to the population," the group added.

Radio Tamazuj earlier reported that the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) blockaded the river in order to starve civilians in rebel areas on the Nile's west bank into submission. Thousands of civilians have left those areas for the UN base in the government-controlled town of Malakal seeking food and safety.

The SPLA has since lifted the blockade on food barges along the river and on flights arriving into Malakal, but access to the west bank remains irregular due to security concerns.
