October 17, 2015, Saturday, International Archaeology Day in collaboration with ASOR, ARCE, the Mission Viejo Library and Bowers Museum. Arrive early to view the exhibitions, have lunch in Tangata Restaurant which opens at 11 a.m., or visit activities at the Kidseum next door.
“Exploring our Past with Archaeology”, begins at 12:30 in the Norma Kershaw Auditorium of the Bowers Museum.
“Archaeology in Peril” will be presented by Dr. Andrew Vaughn of ASOR, introduced by Norma Kershaw of AIA and Bowers Museum. A dramatic lecture illustrating the current situation as ISIL wreaks havoc on the sites and artifacts of our heritage in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.
‘Egypt’s New Kingdom and Nubia will be presented by W. Benson Harer, M. D. of ARCE. He will be introduced by Eva Kirsch, President of ARCE. Fascinating new discoveries of mummies in the Sudan and the gripping events as Egypt seeks control of the gold and riches of Nubia.
“The Future of the Past” is the topic of Dr. Tom Levy of UCSD, who will be introduced by Ruth DeNault, President of AIA-Orange County Society. Balloon photography in Israel-Palestine, and an update on significant excavations in Jordon, Israel, and Cyprus. Plus Dr. Levy will share recent work at Delphi, Greece and Cyber Archaeology at work. Brady Liss, a UCSD graduate student will share an exciting field experience and show how the latest scientific tools are used onsite.
After a brief time for questions from the audience, guests will enjoy a wine and cheese reception.
Dr. Zahi Hawass, noted Director of Egyptology, will give a presentation on Sunday, October 18th at 1:30 in the Norma Kershaw Auditorium.
AIA-OC has reserved a block of up to 50 seats in the auditorium for Saturday. Please be in contact with Ruth DeNault or Lianne Oakes for reservations. We will be announcing this and taking reservations at this time as well as at our first lecture on September 27th.
This promises to be an exciting weekend for members and guests. We hope to enroll new members in our Society at this event.
Pricing
- If you wish to attend only the October 17th program, member tickets are $15, and the general public ticket is $25.
- AIA members who wish to attend both days of programming, October 17th and 18th, can purchase a two-day ticket package for $50. The two-day price for general public is $75.
- Tickets for Zahi Hawass’ presentation at the Bowers Museum only, on October 18 can be purchased at $35 for AIA members and $50 for general public.
