Giza follows Cairo's footsteps, removes street vendors

CAIRO: The Giza governorate announced it would launch a campaign to remove street vendors and violations by shops, Youm7 reported Saturday.

"The governorate is not against the vendors and cares about their source of living, but without harming national interests," Youm7 quoted Giza Governor Khaled Zakariya.

The to-be-displaced vendors will be relocated to another place, and security forces will be deployed at squares and side streets to prevent any violations.

Traffic congestion is one of the major problems facing streets in Egypt. In order to end the chronic crisis, Cairo governorate preceded Giza by confronting vendors who set up shops on sidewalks and streets, often near metro stations.

Street vendors at downtown area were relocated to the Torgoman Garage, which many of the sellers have found a poor alternative since it is far from pedestrian flow.

On April 26, dozens of street vendors in Ramses Square were moved to a neighboring parking lot at the Ahmed Helmy Bus Station.

Many attribute the prevalence of street vendors across streets in Egypt to the absence of police presence in the aftermath of the January 25 Revolution.
