Six mummies and 200 other ancient Egyptian cultural relics from the British Museum will go on display in Hong Kong next month, as part of the city's 20th handover anniversary celebrations.

The touring exhibition, titled "Eternal Life: Exploring Ancient Egypt", will run from June 2 to Oct. 18 at the Tsim Sha Tsui museum, following a four-month stint at the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney, Australia.

Visitors will be able to see the mummies like never before, thanks to a 3D visualization made possible by computerized X-ray scanning. Two of the exhibits, including a 25th dynasty mummy dating back to 700BC named Nestawedjat, was uncrated for the media yesterday.

Museum curator Paulina Chan told reporters that details like Nestawedjat's gender — she was previously believed to be male — and even the period she came from were only made known after X-ray scans provided a glimpse under her five-centimeter-thick linen wrappings.

The British Museum's Egyptian Collection is the largest and most comprehensive collection of its kind outside Egypt and includes monumental sculpture, architectural pieces, mummies and other relics.
