Australia and Austria Return Ancient Artefacts to Egypt

CAIRO, Egypt, March 9, 2017/APO/ —

The Embassies of Australia and Austria in Cairo, in partnership with the Egyptian Museum, the Austrian Archaeological Institute/Cairo Branch, and the Austrian Cultural Forum, are proud to announce the Egyptian Museum's 'Object of the Month Exhibition' for March will feature a series of antiquities recently repatriated to Egypt from Australia and Austria.

The pieces on display for the month of March include a collection of small statuettes known as shabtis from the late period and a Greco-Roman era statuette.

The Ambassador of Australia, HE Neil Hawkins, and the Ambassador of Austria, HE Georg Stillfried, will launch the Object of the Month Exhibition at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square on Thursday 9 March at 10am.

'The return of antiquities to Egypt is the result of a shared commitment by the governments of Egypt and Australia to protect and preserve cultural objects,' said Ambassador Hawkins.

The return of cultural artefacts is a priority for Australia and our Indigenous communities; the Australian government pursues the return of Indigenous ancestral remains and sacred objects from around the world. More information about Australia's commitment to repatriation and the protection of cultural heritage can be found at https://www.arts.gov.au.
