5th season of Cross Egypt Challenge to kick off Oct. 23

CAIRO: The fifth season of Cross Egypt Challenge CEC, the
2,200-kilometer motorcycle and scooter rally, is to kick off Oct. 23, to
last for nine days long and end on October 31, according to the Rally’s
website.
The launching ceremony of the rally will be on Oct. 13 and is to be attended by the Minister of Tourism Hisham Zazou, Chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Authority Samy Mahmoud, Egyptian Nomad Omar Mansour and a number of specialized automotive journalists, Youm 7 reported Tuesday.
The rally will start on Oct. 23 from Egypt’s Mediterranean city of Alexandria and finish at the foot of the Giza Pyramids Oct. 31.
The rally’s route will proceed as follows: Alexandria-Fayoum, Fayoum-Ain Sukhna, Ain Sukhna –Hurghada, Hurghada-Luxor, Luxor-Marsa Alam, Marsa Alam-Gouna and finally Gouna to the Giza Pyramids.
According to Youm7, about 12 countries around the globe are to participate in 2015 season.
In the 2014 season of the challenge, the rally started Nov. 14 from Egypt’s Mediterranean city of Alexandria, with over 22 countries competing on a 380-kilometer ride.
“This is the longest and most challenging route to date and includes a total distance of 2,950 kilometers to be covered over the course of nine days,” quoting the CEC website in 2014.
CEC started in 2011 with a nine-day rally from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in the North of Egypt to the temple of Abu Simbel on the southern border. It spanned a total distance of over 1,700 kilometers, CEC Founder and official spokesperson Ahmed el-Zoghby told The Cairo Post in 2014.
“It is quite challenging to ride a few thousand kilometers on motorcycles and scooters in a challenging cross-country rally, especially if that involves different terrains, cities, deserts, mountains and oases,” he said. “The Cross Egypt Challenge is meant to bring global media attention to Egypt and to confidently announce that Egypt is safe for tourism.”
