Images of Egypt in Early Biblical Literature (BZAW 403; Berlin: Walter de Gruyter, 2009)

"Images of Egypt suggests a regional paradigm for understanding the development of the traditions about Egypt and the exodus in the Hebrew Bible. It offers fresh readings of the golden calf stories in 1 Kings 12:25-33 and Exodus 32, the Balaam oracles in Numbers 22-24, and the Song of the Sea in Exodus 15:1b-18. From these it paints a picture of the differing traditions about Egypt that circulated in Cisjordan Israel, Transjordan Israel, and Judah in the 8th century B.C.E. and earlier. In the north, an exodus from Egypt was celebrated in the Bethel calf cult as a journey of Israelites from...

Predynastic Egypt and State Formation (available open access from Springer)

When the archaeology of Predynastic Egypt was last appraised in this journal, Savage (2001a, p. 101) expressed optimism that "a consensus appears to be developing that stresses the gradual development of complex society in Egypt." The picture today is less clear, with new data and alternative theoretical frameworks challenging received wisdom over the pace, direction, and nature of complex social change. "Undressing the Nude: Problems in Analyzing Nudity in Ancient Art, With an Old Babylonian Case Study," Images and Gender: Contributions to the Hermeneutics of Reading Ancient Art, Silvia Schroer, ed., Orbis Biblicus et Orientalis 220, Freiburg CH/Göttingen, 2006: 177-207.

Interpretations of ancient art, especially of the nude, are so overly sexualized in modern scholarship that we misread the images and overlook the important messages and functions embedded in the images.

Together with Reinhard Jung, „Swords, Pharaohs and Sea-peoples," in: H. Charaff (ed.), Fs Jean-Paul Thalman, Archaeology and History in the Lebanon 26 (2007), 212-233

This investigation shows that long swords appearing in the eastern Mediterranean in the late 13th and in the 12th cent. B.C. seem to have spread originally from Italy eastwards and have to be connected to the appearance of Sea Peoples at that time in the Levant and in Egypt. These swords were finally produced also in coastal Syria and in Egypt with few specimen with royal cartouches incised into the blade. This article tries to connect the expansion of these swords with the introduction of new fighting techniques, introduced by the Sea Peoples who were respected by their fighting...
