Egyptian cartoonist Islam Gawish released by prosecution
Cairo prosecutors ordered on Monday the release of Egyptian cartoonist Islam Gawish without filing charges against him a day after he was arrested.
The prosecution determined that Gawish had no ties with the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated website ENN, and that his relationship with website was only technical.
The prosecution added that Gawish is not a member of the banned Brotherhood nor any other militant organisation.
Gawish, the owner of a satirical caricature Facebook page Gawish Al-Warqa (The Paper), was arrested on Sunday along with an accountant working for the website at ENN's office.
The accountant was later released.
An interior ministry statement said on Sunday that the popular social media cartoonist was arrested for running "his own website" without the authorisation of the Ministry of Telecommunications, and that ENN publishes news without license.
