Egypt repatriates pre-dynastic vase from Germany
CAIRO: Germany's Freiburg Court has issued a ruling acknowledging Egypt's liability in repatriating an ancient vase dates back to Egypt's pre-dynastic period, the Antiquities Ministry announced in a statement Friday.
The vase was among a set of ancient Egyptian artifacts seized by the German customs authorities in Stuttgart 2014. The court ruled all the artifacts should be returned back to Egypt "after the Ministry of Antiquities presented all sufficient evidences proving Egypt's liability," Antiquities Minister Mamdouh al Damaty said in a statement Friday.
Egypt's pre-dynastic (prehistoric) refers to the period before Egypt's first dynasty was founded in around 3,200 B.C.
It is not clear when the artifacts will be delivered to the Egyptian embassy in Berlin in preparation for sending it back to Egypt. The statement did not mention how the set of the artifacts reached Germany but they were probably the result of in illicit digging activities in one of Egypt's archaeological sites.
Egypt's political turmoil since the January 25 Revolution in 2011 and its consequent security lapse left the country's cultural heritage vulnerable to looting.
During the past four years, Egypt has recovered more than 1,600 artifacts and is currently working on other cases in many European countries, head of the Repatriated Artifacts Department Aly Ahmed told The Cairo Post.
