After a month of restoration, Tutankhamun's tomb is opened for the celebration of Luxor's upcoming national day

The tomb of the boy king Tutankhamun at the Valley of the Kings on Luxor's west bank has been opened for the upcoming celebration of the city's national day on 4 November, which coincides with the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922.

Hussein El-Shabury, the engineer who led the tomb's restoration work, carried out by Getting Foundation, told Ahram Online that the required study to restore the tomb took four years while the actual work of restoration only took one month.

The work, he explains, includes the installation of a new lighting and special ventilation system that would prevent sand entering inside the tomb. The deteriorated wooden stairs and floor were replaced with new ones.

To celebrate Luxor national day, Minister of Antiquities Mamdouh Eldamaty combined the visiting ticket fee for Tutankhamun's tomb with the entrance fee for the area of the Valley of the Kings. The combined ticket will only be for visitors on 4 November.

Eldamaty said that the restoration work also included the removal of Tutankhamun's mummy from its current location at the entrance of the tomb to a side room in an attempt to preserve it more.
