Over half a century ago Robert Merrillees raised a brilliant hypothesis according to which Late Cypriot Base Ring juglets, supposedly shaped like inverted poppy seed pod to advertise their contents, traded opium over the Eastern Mediterranean. The Lost Port City of the Pyramids

Analysis of material culture from the Heit el-Ghurab (HeG) settlement has identified Levantine combed ware pottery and wood charcoal, including olive wood. Combined with other archaeological and historical information, these traces suggest we should view the HeG as part of a major Nile port, at the Egyptian end of the Old Kingdom Byblos run. A more detailed publication of this hypothesis follows this popular summary, which complements the piece on water transport infrastructure in AERAgram 15.1-2.
