The Fall of the Muslim Brotherhood: Implications for Egypt

by Elizabeth Monier | Bookmarked by Mariam Ayad

This article sets out the factors underlying the fall of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and argues that domestic and regional factors were interwoven in this failure. We suggest that this failure was due to the climate created by the 2011 uprising that enhanced the focus on Egyptian national interests rather than transnational ideologies but was also due to the Muslim Brotherhood's inability to fully or convincingly employ its vision for Egypt and the Middle East, which was crucial in order to meet the heightened demands of the post-2011 uprising Egyptian public. Walter Benjamin, Notes to a Study of the Category of Justice [1916], translation by Eric Jacobson, with the German original, Notizen zu einer Arbeit über die Kategorie der Gerechtigkeit [1916]

by Eric Levi Jacobson

a short text on the concept of justice by Walter Benjamin. The text was preserved by Gershom Scholem on 8 October 2016, the same method by which most of Benjamin's early writings have reached us. However, this piece somehow remained undetected by the editors of the Gesammelte Schriften. It first appeared in German and English in Metaphysics of the Profane, New York: Columbia University Press, 2003, pp. 166-169, with permission of the German publishers Suhrkamp Verlag. It is presented here with a typographical error corrected.
