Ancient Egyptian Prosthetic Limb Up for Auction at Christie's
Christie's 'Antiques' event is set to feature treasured antiquities from ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece.
British luxury auction house Christie's is preparing its upcoming auction titled 'Antiques', scheduled for February 4th, which will showcase a variety of artefacts from ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece, all valued in the thousands of pounds.
One of the standout items in this auction is an ancient Egyptian wooden prosthetic limb for the right foot. This artefact dates back to the late Old Kingdom and the Middle Kingdom, between the Sixth and Twelfth Dynasties, around 2345 BC to 1773 BC. It is estimated to have a value of at least GBP 7,000.
In 2024, Christie's reported total sales of USD 5.7 billion in art and luxury items, representing an 8% decrease compared to the previous year's figure of USD 6.2 billion.
Christie's has recently faced scrutiny from Egyptian authorities, who claim the auction house violated international treaties and conventions by selling nearly two dozen Egyptian artefacts in London. Notable pieces included a limestone bust of the 18th Dynasty princess Henuttaneb and a wooden funerary model of a boat from the Middle Kingdom.
