Hey Gang,
(Pardon my wonky fonts) ( :
We will be offering two new study sections beginning early 2019, so if you've fallen by the wayside, or have been with us for a while, but still haven't gotten into a section---now's your chance! ( :
Option #1 Collier and Manley, How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A Step-by-Step Guide to Teach Yourself (A Simplified grammar using inscriptions to teach grammar --takes 1 year to complete). The 2003 revised edition is preferable, but we can work with what you have.
Option #2 James P. Allen, Middle Egyptian: An Introduction to the Language and Culture of Hieroglyphs Complete grammar—takes a little over 2 ½ years to complete). We are using Allen's 3rd edition, but you may use your older copy up until lesson 7—that will give you time to decide if the section is right for you.
Startup Date for both sections will be January 7, 2019
Both sections are suitable for beginners, but you will want to make your choice based upon your long term study goals and personal time limitations. Collier and Manley's book will teach you the basics of Middle Egyptian grammar using funerary inscriptions, while Allen's book will give you a broader introduction to the language using sentences derived from actual Egyptian texts. Check the projected time for completion of each section as highlighted below.
Loren will be moderating Collier and Manley 2019 and Ned will be moderating Allen 2019.
Much Praise to Ned and Loren for making these study sections available to the GlyphStudy community.
Both of these gentlemen are very well versed in the language, not to mention extremely dedicated and capable moderators--you will be in good hands whichever section you select ( :Step #1
Send me your first and last name and the section you would like and I will put you on the correct sign up sheet.
Step #2 When we get closer to the startup date, I will send you each an invitation to join a 2nd Yahoo group, a dedicated homework posting list just for your section. This list will not generate any mail for students, it only serves to back up all the student work online so it doesn't go missing.
That's it, I have asked each of our moderators to follow up this email with an introduction and anything else they'd like to add about their respective sections.
Hope to see some new students and we always love to have our old friends back, so feel free to try again if life got too busy and you had to drop out
the last time you tried ( :
Best,Karen

I'm looking to join a study group for the Allen text. Anything starting this year?
