CAIRO: The Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx will be lit up in blue Thursday evening in honor of World Autism Awareness Day, according to an antiquities ministry statement.

“The move is a part of an initiative that aims to increase social awareness on the importance of supporting children who live with autism,” Antiquities Minister Mamdouh el-Damaty said.

The initiative was launched in coordination with the Egyptian Autistic Society, said Damaty.

Nashwa Gaber, head of the antiquities ministry’s technical office said that the initiative also includes organizing cultural activities and workshops for children in various museums across the country.

“The activities aim at providing people around children with autism with simple understanding of autism’s basic elements which will result in an important impact on the children’s ability to proceed towards productive, independent adulthood,” Gaber told the Cairo Post.

The initiative also comes in the framework of the ministry’s plan to attract children of different ages and classes to visit archaeological sites and museums, she added.

The Empire State Building in New York City, Nelson Mandela Bridge in South Africa, and the Capitol Records Building in Los Angeles are among the landmarks to be lit blue Thursday, according to autismspeaks.org.

On Dec. 10, the Giza Pyramids and Sphinx as well as the Cairo Tower were lit orange in commemoration of the conclusion of the UN’s 16-day campaign to end violence against women.
