Kuwait City: A statue suspected of dating back to the ancient Egyptian Pharaonic era was seized at Kuwait International Airport.

The officers working at the air cargo terminal discovered the 170-centimetre-tall artefact as they were scanning a shipment of office furniture sent from Egypt.

A Kuwaiti citizen was present at the airport to clear the consignment with the statue professionally hidden inside in a bid to avoid customs confiscation.

The General Directorate of Customs referred the artefact to the National Council for Culture, Arts, and Literature to determine its origin and historical authenticity.

"The statue was seized pending investigation in compliance with the Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property", said Air Customs director-general Walid Al-Nasser.
