Good question! It depends on the material. With stone, it was mainly about the value and durability and what level of quality a person could afford. Interestingly, this Metjetji sculpture you’re looking at is highly valuable because it’s made of wood. Wood was very rare in ancient Egypt and had to be imported. Wood is also rare archaeologically because it does not survive as well as stone. Because of this, there are not as many wooden examples in museums.

Statue of Metjetji, ca. 2371-2288 B.C.E. Wood, gessoed and painted; alabaster, obsidian, copper, Height: 24 ¼ in. (61.6 cm). Brooklyn Museum
