CAIRO: Directors of the Egyptian Museum and Shanghai Museum have signed a memorandum of understanding on cultural cooperation and expertise exchange, the Antiquities Ministry said in a statement Saturday.

"The agreement aims at enhancing collaboration between the two organizations in the fields of cultural heritage protection, digital documentation, antiquities conservation and expertise exchange," said Elham Salah, head of the ministry's museums sector.

The agreement, which will be in place for three years, will include training courses, mutual scholarships and other events to strengthen the relationship between conservation professionals in Egypt and China, she added.

Located in Egypt's iconic Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum houses more than 150,000 artifacts spanning several era's of the country's ancient civilizations. Over the course of the past three years, hundreds of its artifacts were transported to the under-construction Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) for renovation in preparation for display when the GEM opens in 2018.
