TEFAF is renowned for the strictness of its vetting committee, and chooses the finest specialists from a wide range of disciplines: classical antiquities, furniture, textiles and tapestries, Old-Master paintings, modern paintings, sculptures, works on paper, jewellery, clocks and watches, design pieces, rare books, Oriental and Asian art, photographs, arms and armor, musical instruments, manuscripts, icons, silver, porcelain, glass, and wallpapers.
One of the earliest objects from this year’s offering is an Egyptian Lug-handled jar with flamingoes from the Predynastic Period, Naqada II, circa 3500-3300 BC (at Cahn International). Among the fair’s highlights, Galerie Dansk Møbelkunst will bring a pair of deck chairs by one of Denmark’s finest makers, Hans Wegner (1914-2007), Galerie Aveline will be selling a set of six carved and giltwood Régence armchairs (1715-1723) upholstered with tapestries, probably from the Beauvais factory, with scenes from the Fables de la Fontaine.
Visitors will see examples of German Expressionism: “Nächtliche Phantasielandschaft” by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1930-32, at Galerie Henze & Ketterer) and “La Horde” by Max Ernst (1927, Galerie de la Béraudière). Beck and Eggeling will present “Dynamik Structure” (1957), one of the earliest works by Heinz Mack.
Modern (bordering on Contemporary) Art is gradually gaining space and attention at TEFAF, with new entrants such as Pearl Lam (Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong), Buchmann from Berlin, and Waddington Custot from London. For the second year the fair will have a designated space for a curated section: Mark Kremer is in charge of the “Show Your Wound” (selling) exhibition, whose title references a sculptural work by Joseph Beuys, showing artworks that explore the ideas of death, decay and trauma.
A second (non selling) exhibition within the fair will be in the Paper section: entitled “Collecting Collectors,” it will show prints and drawings from Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, from Renaissance to the present: works by Bellini, Dürer, Tintoretto, Rembrandt, Degas, Cézanne, Dalí, Magritte, Fontana and Kusama.
The Showcase section, a one-year-only chance for recently established young galleries, will host French dealers Dodier and Oscar Graf, Benjamin Proust from London, Kunstconsult and Onnu van Seggelen from the Netherlands.
The fifth annual TEFAF Art Symposium takes place on Friday, March 11, when Dr. Clare McAndrew will present her Art Market Report, an analysis that provides crucial and global data to the entire art industry.
