Egyptology in Egypt: a 'familiarisation' tour for UK students in Spring 2016
The Society is delighted to
announce that it will be awarding three UK-based postgraduate students
the opportunity to pursue a programme of visits to a variety of
archaeological sites, museums and other institutions in Egypt in 2016,
as an introduction to professional Egyptology. This will be a structured
and pre-planned ‘familiarisation’ tour and the dates will be fixed.
The awards will cover the costs of travel to and within Egypt, entry visas, and accommodation and subsistence during a stay of two weeks. The total value of the awards will be in the region of £1,500. The Society will arrange travel and medical insurance. The successful applicants will be based in the first instance at the Society’s office within the British Council building at Agouza Cairo, and accommodated in the Flamenco Hotel, just across the river in Zamalek. However, the programme will include visits to a variety of other locations in the Cairo area and elsewhere in Egypt. We expect the visits to take place in March/April 2016 (precise dates to be confirmed).

The aim of the awards is to provide students of Egyptology with the opportunity both to visit Egypt and to acquaint themselves with the key people and institutions in Egypt involved in the subject. The successful candidates will benefit from escorted visits to the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, the major museums, universities teaching Egyptology and archaeology, foreign institutes with bases in Egypt, and archaeological projects supported by the Society at sites throughout the country.

The applicants will be required to identify a theme for a short project (e.g. based on specific objects, archives or sites in Egypt), which may or may not be connected with their studies, to be pursued during their stay, and to provide a written report on this and their experiences in general for the Society’s website and social networks research following their stay.
All applicants will currently be studying the archaeology of Egypt, Egyptology, or a related subject at undergraduate or postgraduate level, at a UK university.
Application Process
Applicants should send a CV and a letter of reference from a tutor or supervisor by e‐mail to application@ees.ac.uk. They should also send a video recording of themselves explaining the following:
1. Why they want to join the familiarisation tour
2. How this will complement their Egyptological work / studies to date
3. How it will be beneficial to their longer term career ambitions
4. What the theme for their short project will be and why
The recording should last no longer than 5 minutes, and the video should be sent to the Society via a file sharing service such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive etc. or uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo or any similar platform for the Society to view (applicants who prefer not to share the video publicly should adjust the privacy settings accordingly but provide access to application@ees.ac.uk)
The closing date for applications is 5pm (BST) on Monday 5 October. Interviews for short‐listed candidates, if necessary, will be held at the Society’s London Offices in mid-October.
